The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission wishes to inform Registrants that the information they provide to the Registry is fully protected as private information and will not be shared with any person or organization without the registrant’s explicit written consent.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The registration process has been going very well. To date, we have been contacted by just over 1000 people who are interested in signing up for the Registry. Our target population consists of about 2500 former employees. So, we are doing pretty well but still have a long way to go.

For the first six months of the project, we focused most of our communication efforts on the Baie Verte Peninsula. Now, we are widening our scope to try to reach the former employees who have moved away to other parts of Newfoundland or to the mainland. We are advertising in local newspapers and on the radio, and we have even had a few television appearances.

We need your help spreading the word to as many people as possible who are eligible to register. That means anybody who worked at the mine site for as little as a month and in any capacity. This includes people who worked as summer students, or people who worked for the Northco Sawmill after the mine closed, or people who worked for outside companies that had contracts with the mine.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Information Meetings: We have held 14 information meetings since the beginning of the project. The purpose of these meetings is to explain the registry to interested people, and answer any questions you might have. So far there have been meetings in Baie Verte, Fleur de Lys, St. John’s, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia.  The number of people who attended each meeting was varied, but our team members always went away with a new idea or message from a former employee. At the end of this project in late 2009 or early 2010, the team will revisit Baie Verte for a final meeting to report on the success of the project.
